Intro to Big Canoe 

 

 

Prerequisites:  

  • Introduction to Tandem Lake Water ( CKNB 01 or PC LC-T01 or PC BC Intro) recommended or discretion of instructor.

 

Course length:

  • 1 day ( 8-10 hrs)

 

Class ratio:

  • 1:10

 

Location and conditions: 

  • Sheltered area, winds <10 kmph

 

Theory and knowledge:

  • History of Big Canoeing

  • Canoe design and performance       

  • Equipment choice and care                                

  • Regulations and Constraints

  • Team synchronization concepts 

 

Technical Skills"

  • Off-water: Canoe handling 

  • On-water: Basic Strokes for stern, middle, bow – cadence, switching sides, braces, draws and prys, rudders, sweeps, sculls, reverse          

  • On-Water: Team synchronization and strategy (effective paddling in calm, or unplanned wind, waves, tide)

  • Maneuvers:  side-slipping, pivots, figure eights, lean turns, stopping, (optional) dock landings

 

Safety and Rescue

  • Safe Paddling Rules

  • Rescues: Self & assisted ( bailing or tow ashore only)

  • Planning and risk assessments ( see extra for clubs)

  • Environmental Concerns
