Basic Canoeing

Course Description:

Basic canoeing is an introduction to canoeing for novices or first time canoeists. Course participants will learn about parts of the canoe, important safety gear, basic canoe strokes, and maintaining canoe control.

Course Length:  1 day (4-8hrs)

Location:  Sheltered Lake

Conditions:  Calm

    1. Launching from shore and dock

    2. Paddling position, trim, balance

    3. Changing positions

    4. Strokes – power, J, sweep, draw, push-away, pry, reverse, rudder

    5. Maneuvers – Side slipping

    6. Circles (Inside & Outside 15 m.)

    7. Stopping

    8. Straight line 50 m.

    9. Pivots

    10. Lifts & Carries

    11. Tying a Canoe on a Vehicle
